What Inseam Do I Need for My Height? A Tall Woman's Guide
By Michelle, Founder of Finally TALL
Why your height isn't enough
Two women who are both 5'10" can need different inseams. Some of us are tall through the torso, and some of us are all legs. That's why the size chart that says "tall" still lets so many of us down.
I'm 5'9", and for years nothing was long enough. I grew up wearing my brother's jeans because they were the only ones that reached my ankles. So trust me, this matters.
A simple starting point
Use this as a guide, then fine tune it with the measuring tip below.
| Height | Usual inseam |
|---|---|
| Up to about 5'8" | Around 32 inches (regular) |
| 5'9" and up | 33 inches and longer (tall) |
| Long legs, or you love heels | 35 to 36 inches and up |
Every brand cuts a little differently, so think of this as where to start looking, not a rule.
Find your real inseam in 2 minutes
Grab a pair of pants that fit you the way you like. Lay them flat. Measure from the crotch seam straight down the inside of the leg to the bottom of the hem. That number is your inseam. Write it down and keep it in your phone.
Your shoes change everything
If you wear flats most days, you'll want a little less length than if you live in heels. Full length pants for flats should just graze the top of your foot. With heels, you'll want enough length to cover most of the heel.
The cut matters too
Skinny and straight leg pants are the most forgiving if the length is a little off. Wide leg and flare pants need to be exactly right, because they're meant to fall close to the floor.
Shop by the garment, not the label
When a brand lists the actual inseam of a pair of pants, compare it to your number. It's far more reliable than the word "tall" on the tag.
Answers to common questions
- Is a 34 inch inseam considered tall?
- Yes. Most regular pants have around a 32 inch inseam, so 34 inches is a common tall length.
- What inseam does a 5'10" woman need?
- Many women around 5'10" wear somewhere between a 34 and 36 inch inseam, depending on their leg length and shoes. Measuring a pair that already fits you is the best way to know.
- Can tall pants be hemmed shorter?
- Yes. Pants that are too long can always be hemmed. Pants that are too short can't be made longer, so when you're unsure, go longer.
