The fit guide
How to measure yourself.
Six measurements. Ten quiet minutes. Then we can find clothes that fit the body you actually have.
What you need
- A soft tape measure.
- A friend, if you can. Some of these are easier with help.
- Fitted clothes or underwear, so the tape sits close.
i.
Height
- i.Stand barefoot on a hard floor with your back against a wall.
- ii.Heels, bottom and shoulders touch the wall. Look straight ahead.
- iii.Rest a flat book on top of your head and mark the wall under it.
- iv.Measure from the floor to the mark.
ii.
Inseam
- i.Stand barefoot on a hard floor, feet a little apart.
- ii.Hold a book flat and snug up between your legs, like a saddle.
- iii.Measure from the top of the book straight down to the floor.
iii.
Torso loop
- i.Start at the top of one shoulder, halfway between your neck and your shoulder point.
- ii.Run the tape down the front, between your legs, and up the back to the same starting point.
- iii.Keep the tape snug, not tight.
- iv.Stand tall and relaxed, then read the full loop.
iv.
Arm length
- i.Let your arm hang relaxed at your side.
- ii.Find your shoulder point, the bony edge at the top of your arm.
- iii.Measure down the outside of your arm to your wrist bone.
v.
Waist
- i.Find the narrowest point of your middle, usually just above your belly button.
- ii.Wrap the tape around, level all the way round.
- iii.Breathe out normally and read the tape. Snug, never pulled in.
vi.
Hips
- i.Stand with your feet together.
- ii.Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
- iii.Keep it level and read it where the ends meet.
Tips for tall women.
- Measure your inseam on a hard floor, barefoot, standing against a wall. Carpet and shoes both throw it off.
- Write each number down as you go.
- Not sure? Measure twice and use the longer one.
